                                                                     Prologue

Bill was sitting on the floor in the living room with his legs
stretched out in front of him, his back against the wall; eyes
closed. Water dripped from the open roof adding its sound to the breathing of his companions. Blood ran down his right cheek from the many cuts on his face and head. He would be surprised if he could find any place on his body that wasn’t bruised or bleeding. He had never been so exhausted in his life.
Opening his eyes with great effort, he looked around the
room. The windows and doors were gone, blown out of their frames and lying in broken shards. Light from a dim moon shone through the openings and weakly shimmered off the pieces of glass. He could smell the remains of the fires that had burned, wondering how much of the house was actually still standing. He hadn’t had time to pay attention. Looking up through the gaping holes in the roof, he saw there weren’t many stars out tonight. He was sure their enemies would have preferred there be no moon either, but you don’t always get what you want.
He turned his head to the right and saw his friend Patrick,
sitting in much the same position as he was. Patrick’s eyes were closed and he was breathing slow and even. Patrick opened his
eyes and turned to face Bill. Bill was beyond being shocked after what they had been through, but his friend looked like he’d been run over by a train.
“You look as bad as I feel, Rev,” Bill said, as he managed aweak smile.
“You should see yourself. If I didn’t know who you were, I might be afraid you were one of them.”

“Maybe we can use this as a disguise to infiltrate their ranks and launch a sneak attack.”
Patrick laughed, but the motion caused several areas of
his body to protest in pain. “Don’t make me laugh, Bill; I hurt
enough as it is. How’s Donna?”
Bill looked down and to his left. The third member of their
team was lying next to him, her head resting in his lap. She was asbeaten and bloody as he was, perhaps even more. In the dim light,he could see her chest rise and fall in a slow even tempo. Bill turnedback to Patrick. “I think she fell asleep. You get any sleep?”
Patrick shook his head slowly. “Didn’t see much point in it. Sitting is good enough. How do you feel?”
    “I don’t think I could hurt much more. I don’t remember
much after being slammed to the ground.”
“I saw that, looked like it really hurt.”
    “Now there’s an understatement. Kind of quiet out there;
they must be preparing for the final attack.”
Patrick sighed. “Yes, I suppose they are. It won’t be too
long before we’re overrun. Abigor has most certainly run out of patience with us. The next attack will be the last. Can you see them, Ray?”
The fourth and final member of the group was standing next to the living room window frame. “No, but I can smell them. They seem to be distracted right now. I don’t see Abigor.”
“See any sign of help?” Bill asked.
“No. Something’s going on up on the road, but I can’t see
what from here. Guess it’s just us.” Ray turned and smiled at the others. “Kind of reminds me of Custer’s last stand. Maybe wecan do better than the General did.”
    “Hope springs eternal my friend.”
“Was it worth it? Did we accomplish our goal, Patrick?” Bill asked.
Patrick sighed. “I don’t know. We weren’t told if we would fight this one battle or live to fight again. One way or another, we’ll know before the night is over.”
Bill nodded his understanding. The six months he had
endured, that they all had endured, brought them to this point in
time. It was in God’s hands now, as it always had been, and he was glad it was almost over. He tilted his head as he heard a low murmuring noise coming from outside the building. He smiled.
“Our friends must be back and getting restless. I want to
meet them outside. We should stand and face them. Think you can make it?”
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Patrick said as he struggled to his feet.
“Me either,” came a soft voice. Donna sat up slowly, groaning from the effort. She looked at Bill and smiled.
That smile made Bill both happy and sad. He wished they
had met long ago. There was so much he wanted to share with this woman. There just wasn’t any more time left. They would most likely be dead soon.
“If we live through the night, will you marry me?” Bill
asked, surprising himself as much as he surprised Donna.
He saw a tear run down her cheek, but her smile grew even
larger.
“You bet. I have witnesses, so you can’t back out.”
“Not in a million years.” He leaned over and kissed her
lightly on the lips. An ache filled his heart knowing this might
be the last time he would ever do that. Then, with great effort, he stood up. He took a few steps to loosen up his legs and then turned to his friends. “You guys ready to rumble?”
Donna, Patrick and Ray all grinned. Each grabbed their sword and walked through the remains of the front door. The howls began as they emerged. The noise came from every direction. The very air pulsed with the evil they were confronting. The four were completely surrounded. Abigor stepped forward, his minions shifting nervously behind him. They knew what the four warriors could do and were not anxious to attack. In the shadows were eyes, thousands of them, full of hate and evil. The forms moved in and out of the flickering light from the fires, wraths from Hell.
“You know Bill, you could have asked me to marry you
yesterday and we might have missed all this.”
The four of them were now back-to-back. Slowly turning in a circle, they held their swords out in front of them. “We could have taped a note on the door and said we were on our honeymoon.”
     “And miss all this fun?”
“Any suggestions on what we do?” she asked.
“No, nothing comes to mind, but you’ll be the first to know
as soon as I come up with something.”
The demons were moving closer, either no longer afraid, or being pushed into action by their leaders. Abigor stood silently and stared at the humans as his demons started forward. It would not be long before the attack came and this time,Bill knew they would lose.
“Okay, boys,” he called out. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”
    The attack came swiftly.
